ABOUT STRETTON UNDER FOSSE
Stretton-under-Fosse, a hamlet of about 70 houses, straddles the B4027 Lutterworth to Coventry Road with a few outlying houses in Smeaton Lane and some isolated farms at its northern edge. There is a small industrial area near the canal, The Wharf, and a boat hire business on the canal at Stretton Stop. The community lies between the larger villages of Brinklow and Pailton in an area which is known locally as The Revel, named after the ancient manor of Newbold Revel, originally called Fenny Newbold until it came into the ownership of Hugh Revel in the 13th century.
The hamlet is built in a hollow beneath the ridge of the Fosse Way to the north which cuts through the farmland and journeys along the rather bleak higher ground towards Leicester. The Oxford Canal forms part of the parish boundary to the south, about a mile from the centre of the village and the M6 motorway runs under the Fosse Way again to the north in a nice juxtaposition of ancient and modern transport systems which make Stretton a popular location for commuters.
Until relatively recently there were two working farms in Stretton, a public house - the Union Jack - and a small shop. These have all now disappeared but the village is served by Malt Kiln Farm Shop, many small industries are established at The Wharf, Rose Narrowboats boat building and holiday boat hire runs a thriving business at Stretton Stop and Newbold Revel hosts the national Prison Officer Training College. The Village Hall enables residents to socialise locally. There is no church in the village but residents can worship at any of the Revel Group of Churches in the neighbouring villages.
Our local school is The Revel C of E (Aided) Primary School
The Revel School is a Christian community with strong ecumenical links with the local churches where children succeed in an atmosphere characterised by a strong moral code, educational success, social happiness, warm relationships and high academic expectations.
The school's mission statement:
The Revel School provides a safe, caring environment for learning where everyone is cherished and encouraged to strive for excellence. Our Christian values are central to developing confident, considerate and successful individuals.
The school aims to:
· create opportunities for present and future learning through a rich, diverse and innovative curriculum which engages our pupils.
· provide inclusive provision with challenging opportunities to engage all learners and cultivate intelligence through a love of learning.
· value all achievement and success - thereby enabling all pupils to develop emotionally, physically, socially, intellectually and creatively as individuals.
· form a reciprocal relationship with home and family so that we can work together in partnership in the best interests of all pupils.
· develop an attitude of care, consideration and respect amongst our pupils for our environment and communities at all levels.
· encourage our pupils, parents and staff to engage with decisions about school life and learning so that they can contribute in a meaningful way to our constant drive for improvement.
The Revel School priority area is as follows:
The parishes of Brinklow, Churchover (including part of Coton Meadows), Coombe Fields, Easenhall, Harborough Magna,
Monks Kirby, Pailton, Stretton-under-Fosse,
Withybrook and Cosford
The many acres of farmland in the parish are mostly arable, with some livestock, and there are areas of light woodland altogether creating an interesting environment for ramblers and naturalists that is criss-crossed by a network of footpaths.
